Landskrona
In the last decade, photography as an art form has attained a position never before seen in Sweden. The number of galleries, institutions and museums exhibiting contemporary Swedish and foreign photographs has never been greater. Nor have so many photo books been published before. And prices paid for photographs at auctions have never been higher.
Despite this, there is not so much interest or research concerning photography from historical, social and aesthetic perspectives. People are paying as never before to get into exhibitions, but they often feel that have no key to understanding why they were affected, or not. Knowledge about photography in its capacity as artwork, firebrand, document, evidence, memory … is fading, both figuratively and literally.
No institution in the country has hitherto tried to show the dynamic and complex role it entails to exhibit the best of contemporary international and Swedish photography, and simultaneously to be a centre of learning for the theory and history of photography – with the emphasis on Scandinavia, but taking a broader view when necessary. Landskrona Foto aims to do this.
